Sclerotherapy Vein Treatment

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure that aims to eliminate varicose veins and spider veins. The treating physician will use a very fine needle to inject a special solution directly into your vein. The whole procedure will take approximately 15-30 minutes, and is relatively painless.

If you have varicose veins, you should set up a consultation with a vein specialist to find out if you’re a candidate. Women who are pregnant are not eligible, while women on birth control are. If you’ve had a blood clot, a specialist will determine if you’re eligible based on a number of factors.

Before the procedure, you should drink plenty of fluids. If you’re taking any regular medications, you should notify your doctor before hand.

After your appointment, you might experience side-effects such as itching, burning, raised, red areas or bruising. These typically last days to weeks. Larger veins could become lumpy and brown lines or spots at the vein site may appear, but these side-effects usually subside after a few months.

You will be able to resume day-to-day activities immediately after the procedure, and can even drive yourself home. Walking is encouraged to promote blood flow. You will need to wear support hosiery to compress the treated vessels, and reduce swelling, but only for approximately a week.

If you have varicose veins or spider veins, sclerotherapy is a great option. It’s a safe and highly effective procedure with visible improvement seen quickly. You will have a short recovery period and be able to resume normal activities quickly. If you’re looking for an effective vein treatment with a short recovery time, sclerotherapy is a great option.
